Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
