Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
